An Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) can be used to evaluate the thermal stability of hazardous materials by simulating adiabatic conditions to determine self-heat rate and pressure dataIt can identify the onset temperature of an exothermic or endothermic event, model reaction kinetics, and provide data for safety applications like vent sizing. This makes ARC crucial for safety and performance evaluations of materials, explosives, propellants, and batteries.

Key capabilities of an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter:

Thermal stability evaluation:

Assesses the thermal behavior of materials, especially those that are self-reactive, and determines conditions under which they could become unstable.

Reaction kinetics modeling:

Provides data used to model the kinetics of a reaction, which helps predict how a reaction will proceed over time and under different conditions.

Pressure and temperature monitoring:

Measures a system’s temperature and pressure response over time, which is vital for understanding how a system reacts when heated.

Safety and performance evaluation:

Used to test the safety of chemicals, explosives, propellants, and batteries to prevent thermal runaway and ensure safe storage conditions.

Low self-heat rate detection:

Can detect and measure reactions with very low heat generation rates, down to approximately 1 to 2 watts per kg.

Isothermal aging:

Allows for testing under constant temperature conditions to evaluate long-term stability.

Gas/solid phase analysis:

Can analyze reactions involving gas and solid phases.

Battery thermal runaway characterization:
Specifically used to study the conditions and characteristics of a battery thermal runaway event to improve safety measures.
